First Week of School Mountain

That is what I'm calling this week. Because it was a roller coaster.

Things started off rocky. I was feeling extremely disheartened and frustrated. I was feeling oppressed and stifled and (just like last year) ostracized.

But then something miraculous happened. We got the ok from our principal to plan separately. First grade will basically plan in two groups. The ladies I am planning with are positive, open, and warm. We all teach differently and all appreciate each other for it. Common planning sessions are a time to share ideas, successes, and struggles. I feel so optimistic about the year ahead.

Routines are getting established in my classroom a little at a time. It feels so bizarre after my summer of training to have 19 big eyes staring at me, waiting on the next thing I'm going to say. You mean they're not going to just go FIND work? I have a great group. I have a few "barometer children" but thankfully no "barometer groups," so problems are dealt with easily. My kids all seem to be "big thinkers" already. They looooooove math. Not many seem to be into writing so that might be an uphill battle this year. However, all 19 are dolls and I love them already.

Other things that led to the up-and-downiness of the week... my little one started school. He loves his new class and has been so excited when I pick him up. He's gotten really upset every time he seems me though. Also, on the second day of school both cars were broken into. So that's fun.

It started off difficult but this week really was wonderful. I hope it's indicative of things to come.
